FIRST STOP FOR FARMING FACTS
Lectures and demonstrations on keeping farm livestock healthy are a highlight of Seymour Alternative Farming Expo.
The Seymour Agricultural Society will be presenting information sessions at the three-day event at the Kings Park Recreation Reserve each day from Friday to Sunday, February 15-17.
Society president and Seymour veterinary surgeon Dr Andrew Hogan said sessions would be held at site number 135, with a full timetable available at expo's entrance gates.
Sessions would be in blocks of about an hour, including time for visitors to ask questions.
The Friday and Saturday sessions, with some assistance from Department of Primary Industries staff, would cover livestock issues.
Visitors can expect to hear topics such as:
- An introduction to cattle for small properties.
- How much can you do on your own.
- Cattle health basics.
- Do you need a bull?
- Artificial insemination.
- Calving - how to recognise when a cow is calving and when to get the vet involved.
- What equipment should be kept on hand to assist the vet.
Andrew said this information could mean more live calves on the ground and fewer problems for farmers.
On the Sunday there would be a focus on alpacas.
It would give visitors to expo an introduction to farming a small herd, from two to 20 or more animals.
"You need to have your head around shearing and worming and basic things," Andrew said.
"We will do some shearing and toe trimming demonstrations.
"The lectures and practical demonstrations will let you know what to expect.
"We will offer contact details for shearers, advice on the qualities of the fleece, and explain how to select the right alpaca.
"Lamb losses to foxes can be as high as 25 per cent and alpacas limit flock predation they can cut that figure way back."
Andrew said the Seymour Agricultural Society was 150 years old and its 150 members, including three vets on the committee, had a big bank of practical knowledge on all aspects of farming and grazing.
"Agricultural society members with years of experience in sheep and cattle will be around and will be happy to be asked questions by expo visitors," he said.
"Our society's involvement with Seymour Expo is about education.
"It's our way to pass on some of the skills of our long-term farmers to newcomers, and even to others who have not been on the land for so long."
