NMIT brings the best in farming expertise and country lifestyle to SAFE
NMIT has a program of 15 seminars scheduled for this year's Expo with topics ranging from selecting fish for farm dams to the value and application of Biochar
NMIT is tripling its involvement at this year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo (SAFE) with the addition of two new NMIT ‘Zones’ at the Southern Hemisphere’s most successful alternative farming and lifestyle expo.
In addition to the popular NMIT Ag Zone, Expo visitors will also be able to visit NMIT’s new ‘Food Zone’ as well as a ‘Hair, Health and Beauty Zone’.
“By adding the two new ‘Zones’ we aim to give Expo visitors a snapshot of our diverse industry-based training programs as well as adding to their enjoyment of this year’s event ,” says NMIT Associate Director of Earth Sciences, Wayne Pappin.
The NMIT Ag Zone, now an established fixture at SAFE, is a convenient one-stop-shop for rural technical innovations, advice and seminars ideal for the small holding owner. The Ag Zone is home to experts from NMIT and other rural organisations and features stands with the latest in agricultural products, services, alternative livestock and food production. Staff from NMIT will also be on hand to advise on training and career pathways for primary industries including agriculture, land management, conservation, aquaculture, equine, viticulture and horticulture.
NMIT meat processing staff will demonstrate how to breakdown meat carcases and identify the best cuts in the Butcher Shop at this year's Expo
A big feature of the NMIT Ag Zone is the NMIT Seminar Program. Fifteen seminars will be run over the three days with an emphasis on ‘how to’. Topics include: Fish Selection for Farm Dams; Establishing a Small Vineyard; Livestock Selection for Small Holdings; Sustainable Garden Design; Soil Improvement; Producer’s Accreditation for Farmer’s Markets; Care of Poultry, Aquaculture in Victoria and Biochar. The Seminar Program will be presented in conjunction with the Seymour Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s program of demonstrations and talks on livestock handling and husbandry.
The new NMIT Food Zone brings experts from NMIT’s Hospitality and Meat Processing programs to SAFE with demonstrations of butchery, food preparation and cooking using fresh local produce.
“If you have ever wanted to know more about selecting cuts of meat then the NMIT ‘Butcher’s Shop’ is the place to learn,” says Wayne Pappin. “Expo visitors can watch our expert butcher break down lamb, pig, deer and goat carcasses; learn how to make their own gourmet sausages and smallgoods or prepare the ultimate spit roast.”
Biggest Loser star to be special guest at the NMIT ‘Country Kitchen’
Manicure, hair braiding and massage are the activities that Expo patrons can experience at the NMIT Personal Services site in the General Exhibition Building
The Food Zone also includes the NMIT ‘Country Kitchen’ where our expert chefs will demonstrate how to get the best from your meat. Learn how to make the most of leftovers by creating great garnishes; prepare curried lamb; make creative salads, pastas and ragu or learn how to cater for a country-style banquet with tips on plating, centrepieces and table arrangement.
Appearing as a special guest in the ‘Country Kitchen’ will be The Biggest Loser’s Shannan Ponton. A team trainer on the popular (TEN network) TV show, Shannan will spend about an hour at the ‘Country Kitchen’ on Saturday and Sunday (around 1pm on Saturday and 11am on Sunday) to participate in the cooking program and to sign autographs.
NMIT’s third ‘Zone’ is all about relaxing and looking your best. The NMIT Hair, Health and Beauty Zone features aromatherapy consultations, hand and corporate massage, hair braiding and nail manicure by staff and students from NMIT’s Personal Services Department.
NMIT chefs will prepare delicious dishes using local produce at the Country Kitchen at this year's Expo
NMIT is one of Victoria’s leading hairdressing, beauty, massage and aromatherapy schools. Staff and students will be available to answer questions about careers and training in hair, beauty and massage.
